As I sit by the water steps away from where we sat
I remember you sitting there with me, your dog's head in my lap
but now
As the sky is gray and cloudy
and the air is cold and thin I wish that
I was sitting there with you
my hand upon your hand to keep you warm

And now the world is greatly troubled
even more so than before
Black smoke billows from the palace
Reminding me of the coming war
And I'm reminded how we hoped that night
That things just might improve
and how we talked all night in circles about what we'd seen on the news
and I miss you

We admired all the stars that night
and how they looked so pretty twinkling
over the calm lake water and above the busy city
Your dog barked at all the passersby
You put your head upon my shoulder
Stopped my shiver with your body
Prevented me from getting cold as the wind blew

We walked and talked side-by-side
'til we got back to yours
you said I could pick the music
While you finished up your chores
We got high and listened to Beatles records
Late into the night
Until I held you close and kissed you hard
And you looked into my eyes and said
"I want you"

Now as I sit by the water
Alone, without you
I look back upon our night together
Wishing that I knew
That the air would just get colder
